I was told that was one of my great grandma Mynoa Andersen's favorite quotes, and it seems to be a spin-off of Else De Wolfe's "Be Pretty if you can, be Witty if you must, but be Gracious if it kills you." It is one of my favorite books, so emotional and compassionate -- and brilliantly written. Oh well!

This is not an upbeat book, but I think you might like John Williams' book Stoner (Stoner is the man's last name; it has nothing to do with druggies). It's a man who was born on a farm and went to college expecting to learn how to do better at farming. Instead, he falls in love with literature and becomes a life-long academic, misunderstood by many and probably not even capable of fully understanding himself. The book begins acknowledging that Stoner was essentially forgotten, but Williams shows how even this seemingly unimportant man's life was terribly important.

A few other quick recommendations, if you haven't read them already: Marilynne Robinson's Gilead, Michael Frayn's Headlong, Adolfo Bioy Casares' The Invention of Morel, J.L. Carr's A Month in the Country, William Maxwell's So Long, See You Tomorrow, Tobias Wolff's This Boy's Life and Old School, anything by P.G. Wodehouse, but particularly Leave It to Psmith, and for some short stories, Maile Meloy's Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It.

Once I started thinking of some of my recent favorites that I think you'll like, the list just kept growing. I love seeing what you're reading, though, and appreciate especially your venture into JCO territory. I've only read her short stories because she simply has too many novels -- where to begin? It is a quick easy read, but I thought it would be fun to read an lds author's book ( it has been awhile since I've tried one) I also just finished First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia remembers. If you have not read this I highly recommend it. I can not believe that these things happens in my lifetime and I had no idea! I look forward to reading one of your suggestions. My goal is not as lofty as yours, but I plan to make time for myself and read a book a month this year. Have you tried...This is Trevor's wife, Sherry. Have you tried Wharton? She's easily my favorite American novelist. The woman's got skill, and a really sharp tongue. Trevor and I differ on favorites. I prefer House of Mirth, he's partial to Age of Innocence. The latter is definitely better written, but I prefer the tone and story line of Mirth.

I'd also recommend The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Another brilliant book by another female writer.

Also, as a writer of YA, I think you should try some of the literary YA. A very beautiful title is A Northern Lights. It's a familiar storyline, but well-done. And, for a really fascinating and brilliant look at contemporary YA, try the Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. Trevor and one of his blog friends both reviewed it on their blogs. E. Lockhart is incredibly good at what she does, and that title hits on a lot of deeper issues while still keeping a very real voice.Sherryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09324484269354163101noreply@blogger.com
